Here’s the secret of a Zirkal:

  1. Divide a circle into three segments.
  2. Divide one segment again.
  3. In its left half place a dragon on a green background.
  4. In the right half put the same things, mirror-imaged.
  5. Now “encode” by erasing elements from those left and right halves, never erasing an element and its mirror image as well.
  6. Copy the “encoded” material into the other two segments of the circle.
  7. Then copy the entire circle onto a transparent sheet.
  8. Put the copy upside down and rotate it above the original.
  9. You’ll see constantly symmetrical patterns, turning at times into six dragons on green.
